Course Overview

The St Bees IGCSE PE course encourages learners to develop knowledge, skills and understanding across a range of relevant physical activities. Students who undertake this course have a passion for physical activity and have a willingness to learn the theoretical principles that underpin effective performance.

This course provides an excellent foundation for advanced study and equips students with lifelong skills in planning, performance and evaluation which is relevant to a wide range of subjects studied at sixth form and beyond.

Course Modules 

The course provides candidates with an opportunity to study both the practical and theoretical aspects of Physical Education. It is also designed to help students thrive in their chosen physical activities. It is important to note that this course is 50% theory and 50% practical and requires students to have a good background understanding of the Combined Sciences subject (especially Biology).

The four key theoretical disciplines of the course are as follows:

  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Health, Fitness and Training
  • Skill Acquisition and Sport Psychology
  • Social, Cultural and ethical influences

In addition, students will undertake and be assessed on four different physical activity contexts.

How You Will Be Assessed 

Students will be assessed via video evidence of four different physical activity contexts (50%) and an externally set exam (50%). Students will be required to meet the following achievement objectives

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the theoretical principles that underpin performance in physical activity/ sport
  • Apply knowledge and understanding of the theoretical principles to a variety of physical activity/sports, including the analysis and evaluation of performance
  • Demonstrate the ability to select and perform appropriate skills to produce effective performance in practical activities

University Courses and Career Paths

Through the study of IGCSE PE at St Bees, students can go on to possible careers such as professional athlete, sport scientist, medical professional, teaching, personal trainer, physiotherapist and many more.
